Shot by Marshall Hawkins Warrenton, Virginia
Marshall P. Hawkins (1910-1988) was a Warrenton photographer who had specialized in pictures of horses, horse shows, hunts and races for almost 50 years.
Mr. Hawkins, who was self-employed, had his pictures published in several sporting publications, including Chronicle of the Horse, Spur and Maryland Horse. A collection of his photographs had been published shortly before his death in a book, “Field of Horses.”
A resident of Warrenton, Mr. Hawkins was born in Lynchburg. He began his career in photography as a garden and landscape photographer in Amherst County, Va. His first commercial picture was a scene of an historic mill on the James River, which he took with a Brownie box camera.
In 1939, Mr. Hawkins’ photography attracted the attention of the famed Virginia horsewoman Mary Elizabeth (Liz) Whitney, who brought him to her Upperville Farm, Llangollen, where she bred and trained horses. There Mr. Hawkins met other horsewomen and horsemen and began specializing in horse photography. During his career he took pictures of horses and horse events from New England to Florida to St. Louis.
