BILLINGS, Robert William
William Blackwood & Sons
1852
w/ original [5] pp. hand-written invoice from Bernard Quaritch, bookseller to Mr. Clarence S. Berment, Esq Philadelphia dated 26 October 1893
Leading 19th-century authority on British architecture and practicing architectural restoral (Edinburgh and Sterling castles) Robert Billings was admired for the accuracy of his drawings and for his lucid, informative commentaries. He was a master geometer, who developed a special skill for developing tracery windows closely matching those of the original Gothic masons. Baronial and Ecclesiastical Antiquities of Scotland is considered his “greatest achievement… and the one with which is name is chiefly associated” (DNB). Its series of detailed etches of 16th century Scottish castles provided a decisive inspiration to the Baronial movement that served as a pattern book for the Gothic revival.
First Edition of this fine series of interior and exterior views of the architectural landmarks of Scotland, all after drawings by British architect, Robert William Billings, together with descriptive letterpress. This is Billings’ greatest achievement and the one with which his name is chiefly associated. As an architect Billings is best known for his restorations of Edinburgh Castle, the Douglas Room in Stirling Castle, Gosford House, Haddingtonshire, for the Earl of Wemyss, Hanbury Hall, Worcester, Crosby-upon-Eden Church, Cumberland, and Kemble House, Wiltshire.
